Our 70’s Cabin Loft
Welcome to our new favorite room - The Loft! - do we say that everytime?!
To say that this Maine Cabin has had a big year would be an understatement. Each newly renovated room becomes our favorite space and we’re really proud of this one.

How we use the loft
Over the past year we have spent quite a bit of time in The Loft, and as a result we really have a feel for the space. We have learned (time and time again) that despite our urge to dive in and "make it pretty", you get a better result with a little bit of patience. So in Maine we made a deliberate effort to make only small upgrades in each space, and with time, perform a larger renovation.
The Loft sits directly adjacent to our Primary Bedroom - so it’s where we typically wind down at the end of the day. We watch a tv show or two, eat a lot, all before heading to bed. Even though this is how we will use the space 90% of the time it also needs to accomplish the following:
Overflow space for guests/sleeping - this is important for hosting!
Be a cozy and casual hang out space for us, the dogs, and our friends too!
It's the only room with a tv so it had to be conducive to watching tv, and a space for David to start his imaginary video game hobby.
The 70’s Cabin Style
If you have been following along on this project you will already know that we have been working hard to maintain that cohesive cabin feel while introducing 70's inspired elements - all while keeping it true to our style.
In the loft you come across a number of types of wood. The floor is a wide plank knotty pine that we recently refinished. The railing is rough sawn lumber in a deep brown, and on the Living Room window wall you will find a diagonal yellow pine. What you wouldn’t have found is any baseboard so we decided to make our own by replicating what you find in the rest of the house.
For the walls we used Capital White by Benjamin Moore - it’s a warm white and we think its lovely. It's also the same color that we used in the Living Room below and is now continuous throughout the space. You can find all of our paint colors and finishes here.
Finally, after refinishing the floors, repairing the walls, painting, and installing baseboard we were ready to layer in the details to create that retro feel. We focused on rich, warm accent colors and clean lines (plus some curves) to keep it from feeling too much like a Lincoln Log cabin. We also found some funky geometric shapes that introduce extra personality and new materials to the space. Oh, and the old ceiling fan is staying!
The Foundational Pieces
The loft is about 200 square feet and quite long. This allows for large sectional and a 75” tv that is far enough away to be viewed properly. We started with a 8’x11’ brown rug as the base that does a great job of running the length of the room while keeping the path from the stairs to the Primary Suite clear.
The AllModern Donia Sectional is the real star. The burnt mustard color and the tufted base make it just so 70's in the very best way! We made sure that it would fit the space and specifically love how the last section returns into the rail. This allows for more of a view, without compromising seating. One of the goals for the space was to sleep extra guests. We shopped for sleeper sectionals but the variety was lacking and we couldn’t find one that worked. However, this couch is VERY comfortable and id have no issue sleeping on it.
On the opposite side of the room you will find the Tahoe Media Console that is absolutely huge at a whopping 94.5”. With a tv so large we didn’t want the console to look undersized - instead we wanted additional space for lamps, decor, and remotes. Bonus, there is a ton of storage for all of the wires other things.
Finally, the biggest, the brightest - the coffee table. She's a show stopper. I mean, amazing, right?! The green marble is a fun contrast to the natural tones and wood, while bringing some fun into the space.
The Details
Adding all the small details to a space, is probably our favorite part of the design process. It’s also what we find makes the biggest difference in the final product. To keep the space cohesive, we tried to focus on picking items that fit within the color palette. As always you should really just do what speak to you! In this case, we added some really fun pops of green and red.
Geometric lines and shapes also makes this space visually interesting. We have a few checkered patterns in various pieces through the room - the blanket, rug, coasters, and pouf. One of our favorite pieces we sourced for this space, is the floor lamp with the oversized shade - its substantial and gives off the best warm light.
We've been trying to balance the right amount of retro vibes and cabin vibes as we go through each space and in this case, these thrifted bird photos help bring this room back to its cabin roots. Our primary suite, which you can see the design renderings for here, will have duck wallpaper so this is a good segue. But this isn't the only art we'll have in this space, we have a really cool feature wall that we're working on too - stay tuned!
