3rd Floor Snug Reveal

You know that feeling when you finish something and you just keep going back to “see it”? This space gives us that feeling, partly because its sooo cozy looking, but also - this has always been an unfinished attic. And now it is THIS. We decided to coin this cozy room, “The Snug” , and we hope to spend lots of time with friends and family up here.

The Snug lies at the top of the stairs to the 3rd floor (once our attic), opposite our new office. As you may remember, these are twin rooms so we carried the same design elements through both spaces, despite their purposes being very different!

// TLDR: the only thing in this design that you NEED is the couch from AllModern. It’s the most comfortable thing we have ever experienced in our entire lives.

// Recap: If you’re just starting with our refinished attic living space, you can read more about the trip to Iceland the inspired the style, our initial design plan, the trim and millwork we used throughout, as well as the 3rd floor office reveal.

A quick reminder of where we started - 1 million years ago.

The Snug

The rooms namesake comes from an alcove that we affectionately started calling “The Snug”… which, as it turns out, is a word the british use quite often (awkward!)

Because we have a Queen Anne Victorian we have a very interesting roof line, which inside creates a bunch of not very usable shapes. This specific alcove didn’t even have a window (ever) and, more recently, was used to run a bunch of HVAC.

So what did we do? We built a platform to cover the HVAC, ran electric, and drywalled the space - to the exact size of a full size bed. Now its become the coziest little Napping Nook.

Entertainment

When planning for this room, we wanted a place to lounge and host, as well as a space the would work for sleeping overflow. While we do like to spend time in our Living Room at the end of the day, we wanted the 3rd Floor Snug to have a more casual feel and for it to be a space for sleepovers and larger movie nights.

We mounted a Samsung QLED TV up here (while we love our Living Room Frame TV, it’s much too fussy for this space) and the viewing angle is really nice when lounging on the couch. We also added a floating console that is big enough to accommodate all of the tv things - like a Playstation that future Stephen will let future David buy (someday). The floating part is nice because it doesn’t take up floor space and keeps things airy. It has a sleek look and the natural wood tone goes perfectly with the Nordic design style - we will definitely be using this modular line by Blu Dot again!

To the left of the TV console area, we have this aesthetically beautiful mini fridge. It puts our old dorm-room mini fridge to absolute shame. The clean lines of this sleek fridge (especially the fluted glass door detail) are perfectly in-line with the style we’re curating up here.

Mini-fridges seem to be stuck between cheap dorm style and super expensive kitchen built-ins… but not this guy! This Super Smart Fridge by Rocco, allows you to see what’s in the fridge as well as complete restocks on the app. While were kind of trying to cut down on the number of things we control with our phone, this fridge is still very worth it. It’s quite, beautiful, and built to maximize beverage storage - we really love it. It was the perfect addition to the 3rd floor because it’s a long way down to the kitchen - you wouldn’t believe how many cans fit in there!

More Skylights, More Sky

Our two new skylights by VELUX are game changers in this space - they wash the room with so much natural light. Because they’re North facing, we don’t get much direct sunlight, which is perfect for ambient lighting. Something really cool about them is that they’re solar powered (this is what allows them to physically open and close, and operate the internal shade), and they come with a rain sensor, so they’ll close themselves - in case you forget to! We could not be more impressed with both the product and the installation, and you can read more about both, here (as well as enter to win your own!).

The Finishing Touches

Like the office, we stuck with an Icelandic color palette, adding bold accent pieces against our neutral base. We layered a navy blue rug on top of our Flor carpet, to add another layer of cozy, a natural-wood tone coffee table, and some fun throw pillows.

We cannot emphasize enough how much we love our new couch. It has a lower profile, which makes it perfect for the slanted ceilings, but it’s nice and deep so you have plenty of room to really get comfy. The cushions are SO soft and just suck you in! We actually had to remove a stud to fit this couch up here, and we customized the dimensions of the closet around this couch. Good thing we love it, because we’re never getting it out!

// AllModern: Working with AllModern on this project was absolutely amazing. Their curated collection makes designing a space like this super easy and attainable.

// Carpet: This was our first time using Flor Carpet Tiles and we were so pleased with both the ease of the install, and the quality. The dimensions of these two rooms wouldn’t work with standard sized rug options, so we liked that we were able to get a custom sized rug, for a reasonable price. It’s also nice that if one of these carpet squares gets stained (life with dogs!), you can easily pull one out for cleaning or replacement. They have so many different options to choose from, too.

Final Thoughts

Throughout this process, so many of you reached out to share that you have similar spaces in your home that aren’t being maximized. We loved creating new, meaningful and livable square footage in our home, and hope that this inspires some of you to do the same!
